Quote of the Week

“We work in the dark — we do what we can – we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art.”

~ Henry James 1843-1916: “The Middle Years” (1893)

Embrace the madness.

  1. Great quote! Love the mention of “doubt”. Is it the doubting of ourselves or the doubting (deeply pondering) of life that drives our passion, or both? I see a great paradox here. I tend to experience both in my creative process. I love Henry James’ and his pal, Edith Wharton’s work. They have a complexity that doesn’t always leave us satisfied in the end. This can be a little maddening, when we like everything tidied up in the end. Thank you for reminding me of how much I love their stories, and how the creative process is a labor of love.
